All-About-PDF DRM For PDF Expiry

One of the most popular features in All-About-PDF is the ability to place an expiration date on a PDF document so that once the date passes, the end user is alerted and the document can no longer be accessed.

This is useful for not only presenting useful information to the reader (for example, when the information in the document is no longer valid), but it can also be used to protect critical intellectual property contained in the files by limiting access to a limited amount of time.

In earlier versions of All-About-PDF, PDF Expiry relied on JavaScript that is injected into the document and evaluated every time the document was accessed.

Setting an Expiry Date on a PDF Document

The biggest limitations with this method are that not all PDF readers support JavaScript so the script may not be evaluated at all and the script can be easily bypassed by simply turning off JavaScript support in the reader or changing the computer’s system clock.

Our users have been asking us repeatedly to find a way around these limitations in PDF Expiry in order to protect their intellectual property.

So, our crack team of coders got to work and we are now proud to unveil the All-About-PDF Digital Rights Management (DRM) Platform.

How does it work?

All-About-PDF DRM places a security wrapper around your PDF document which is then saved with the expiry information. The DRM uses strong encryption (256-bit AES Encryption) to protect the document making it virtually impossible to tamper with. The document can then be set to use a web-based clock instead of the end user’s system clock so that turning the date back will not have an effect on its efficacy.

We are extremely excited by this platform and are planning to build it out with many new features including document access analytics, web based PDF sharing, remote revoke/wipe of documents and more!

In order for this DRM platform to remain secure, it is proprietary to All-About-PDF and consequently all PDF documents protected with it can only be viewed in our FREE PDF reader (currently available for Windows and online. Support for other platforms is coming soon).
